Flooding can cause significant damage to your home, leading to costly repairs and long-term issues. But you can protect your property and get up to $5,000 back to help cover the cost of sump pumps, backwater valves, and weeping tile upgrades.

Not sure where to begin? Our expert team can consult you for free. We’ll take care of everything, from permits to rebate paperwork, so you can relax.

What are the requirements for the rebate?

To qualify for the sump pump rebate in Oakville or any other type, make sure you meet the following general requirements:

  • You must own the home, and it must be connected to municipal wastewater services (homes with septic systems do not qualify).
  • Only work completed after July 1, 2016, is eligible. Any work done before this date does not qualify.
  • All work must be done by a contractor from Halton’s Authorized Contractors List.
  • The subsidy is available once per property. If you’ve already received it for a specific type of work, you can’t apply again for the same thing.
  • To qualify for sump pump installation, you need to disconnect your weeping tiles from the sanitary sewer and install a new sump pump. Both steps are required.
  • The weeping tile disconnection subsidy is tied directly to the sump pump installation. You qualify for 100% coverage for disconnecting your weeping tiles only when it’s done together with a sump pump installation by an authorized contractor. You can pick any contractor you want for this job (different from the sump pump rules).
  • To qualify for the backwater valve rebate in Oakville, the valve must be installed inside your home. Outdoor installations don’t qualify for the Halton Region subsidy. You might also need to show that downspouts or weeping tiles aren’t connected to the sanitary sewer.

What plumbing upgrades are available within the program?

The Enhanced Basement Flooding Prevention Subsidy program in Halton Region, including Oakville, is your chance to reduce the risk of basement flooding. But which upgrade is best for you? Let’s look at each option and see how it can protect your property.

Sump Pumps

Sump Pump

A sump pump system consists of a pit that gathers water and one or more pumps that automatically activate when the water level rises. These systems are typically installed in basements or crawl spaces to prevent flooding. You can opt for submersible pumps, which operate submerged in water, or pedestal pumps, which have the motor positioned above the pit. Additionally, backup options such as battery-powered or water-powered pumps are available to ensure protection during power outages.

Backwater Valves

Backwater Valve

Backwater valves are installed on your home’s main sewer line to stop sewage from flowing backward during heavy rain. Inside the valve, a flap automatically shuts when it senses reverse flow, preventing wastewater from entering through toilets or drains. These valves are particularly crucial if your basement or ground floor is near street level. You can select either mainline valves for whole-house protection or valves designed for specific fixtures.

Weeping Tile

Weeping tile is a perforated pipe installed around your home’s foundation to collect groundwater and divert it away from the building. It connects to a sump pit and pump, helping to keep basements dry. You can choose between exterior systems, which prevent water from reaching your basement, or interior systems, which manage water seepage from inside. In either case, weeping tile serves as an effective defence against flooding.

Some homes have weeping tile, but it’s not connected to anything, while others are connected to the city’s main sanitary drain line. There are also homes that have weeping tile and a sump pump, but the sump pump’s discharge line goes below the house’s foundation. All these design errors can result in wet basement walls, or worse, backup inside the weeping tiles and basement flooding.

Our plumbers can also fix outdated or faulty building designs. For instance, connect the weeping tile to the sump pit, install a sump pump and drill a discharge line and connect it to the outside. Or, eliminate the connection of the weeping tile from the main drain and reconnect it to the sump pit, placing it outside independently.
