Do You Qualify for the Ontario Heat Pump Rebate?

To be eligible for this heat pump rebate in Ontario, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Heating Fuel Source: You must be an Enbridge Gas customer with an active account and primarily heat your home with a natural gas furnace or boiler, or be connected to the Ontario electricity grid and heat your home electrically.
Please note: Cornwall Electric customers are not eligible, as they are connected to the Hydro-Québec grid.
  • Home Type: The heat pump must be installed in a single detached, semi-detached, row house, townhome, or mobile home on a permanent foundation. Newly built homes (occupied for less than six months) are excluded.
  • Home Ownership: You must own the home and be responsible for the purchase and installation costs. Landlords must apply for the rebate; tenants are not eligible.
  • First-Time Installation: This rebate applies only to first-time heat pump installations. Rebates are not available for replacing an existing heat pump.
  • Eligible Products: The heat pump must be listed on Natural Resources Canada’s qualified products list for either cold climate air source heat pumps or ground source heat pumps.
  • System Configuration: Your heat pump may operate independently or alongside a backup heating system (such as a natural gas furnace or electric resistance heating).

Only the heat pump system itself qualifies for the rebate; the backup system does not.
For homes heated with natural gas, the existing furnace (or a new one) may be paired with the heat pump. If you are replacing the furnace, the heat pump must be part of an eligible combination system. Electrically heated homes may keep their existing electrical backup.

For mini- or multi-split heat pump systems, both indoor and outdoor units must be installed at the same time to qualify. Partial replacements or system additions are not eligible.

Unlike previous years, if you are only installing a heat pump, you may no longer require a pre- and post-home energy audit, saving you approximately $600 in upfront costs.

How Much Can You Save with the Home Renovation Savings Program in 2026?

Below is an overview of available rebates based on energy source and heat pump type. Rebates are calculated based on cooling capacity, measured in tons.

Energy SourceHeat Pump TypeRebate per TonMaximum Rebate
ElectricityCold Climate Air Source Heat Pump (ccASHP)$1,250$7,500
ElectricityGround Source Heat Pump (GSHP)$2,000$12,000
Natural GasCold Climate Air Source Heat Pump (ccASHP)$500$2,000
Natural GasGround Source Heat Pump (GSHP)$3,000

In the world of heat pumps, “ton” refers to the unit’s cooling capacity, not its weight. One ton is equivalent to 12,000 British Thermal Units per hour (BTUs/hour). BTUs are a measure of how much heat a unit can remove from a space. The higher the “tonnage,” the more powerful the heat pump’s cooling ability.

Regarding Oil-Heated Homes

Homeowners currently heating with oil should review the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (OHPA) Program, which remains active in 2026 and can provide rebates of up to $15,000. This program operates separately from the Home Renovation Savings Program and is not subject to the standard $7,500 cap.

Why Choose a Heat Pump for Your Home?

Advantages of a heat pump

Heat pumps offer many advantages, providing an energy-efficient and eco-friendly solution for heating and cooling your home.

  • Lower Energy Bills. Switching to an energy-efficient heat pump will allow you to reduce your monthly heating and cooling costs.
  • Enhanced Comfort. You will get consistent and reliable comfort throughout the year, with precise temperature control and improved indoor air quality.
  • Environmental Impact. By installing a heat pump, you’re reducing your carbon footprint as well as contributing to a cleaner, greener planet.
  • Increased Home Value. With a heat pump in your home, you will increase the market value of your home, making it more attractive to potential buyers.

Why Consider a Ground Source (Geothermal) Heat Pump?

Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs), also known as geothermal heat pumps, use stable underground temperatures to deliver efficient heating and cooling. Unlike air source systems, GSHPs are less affected by outdoor air temperature fluctuations.

Key benefits include:

  • High Efficiency. GSHPs can achieve efficiency levels between 300% and 600%, making them among the most efficient HVAC systems available.
  • Long Lifespan. Indoor components can last up to 25 years, while ground loops may last over 50 years with proper maintenance.
  • Low Operating Costs. High efficiency translates into lower ongoing energy expenses.

Although installation costs are higher, Ontario rebates of up to $12,000 can offset a significant portion of the investment.

Frequently Asked Questions: Ontario Heat Pump Rebates 2026

Do I need a home energy audit to get the heat pump rebate in 2026?

Not always. If you’re just installing a heat pump, you can go through the Single Upgrade path and skip the energy audit. But if you’re planning to combine it with other upgrades like insulation or windows to maximize your rebate, then an energy audit will be required.

Is the $5,000 Canada Greener Homes Grant still available?

No, that program ended in 2025. In Ontario, the Home Renovation Savings Program has replaced it, offering up to $7,500 for a standard cold-climate air source heat pump or up to $12,000 if you go with a ground source (geothermal) system.

Why is my rebate lower if I heat with natural gas instead of electricity?

That’s because most gas-heated homes keep their furnace as a backup. It still saves energy, but not as much as switching from electric heating, so the rebate is smaller.

How long does it take to get the rebate?

Once your heat pump is installed and the paperwork is submitted, it usually takes around 60 to 90 days. You’ll get your rebate either by cheque or direct deposit.

Can I keep my gas furnace as a backup?

Absolutely. That’s called a hybrid system. Your heat pump handles most of the heating, and your furnace only kicks in on the coldest days. We’ll make sure your furnace and heat pump are approved to work together before installation, so you still qualify.

Can landlords apply for rental properties?

Yes, landlords can apply as long as they own the property and it meets all other eligibility rules. The home can’t be a brand-new build—it needs to have been occupied for at least six months.

What if my home uses oil or propane?

Oil-heated homes may qualify for larger rebates—up to $15,000 when provincial and federal programs are combined. Propane-heated homes can still qualify for the standard heat pump rebate.

Do I need to remove my gas furnace to qualify?

Nope. You can keep it as a backup in a hybrid system. You just need to make sure your furnace and heat pump are officially matched and on the approved list.

Is my electrical panel strong enough for a heat pump?

It depends on your setup. Most homes are fine, but if you’re switching to a fully electric system, you may need a 200-amp panel. There’s no rebate for the panel itself, but we’ll check your home’s electrical capacity during the consultation and let you know if anything needs upgrading.

What’s the difference between Single Upgrade and Bundled upgrades?

Single Upgrade is just the heat pump—you don’t need an energy audit. Bundled upgrades mean you add things like insulation or windows. That does require an audit, but it can unlock bigger total rebates, sometimes over $10,000.

What if rebate funds run out before the end of 2026?

The program runs on a first-come, first-served basis. The safest move is to get pre-approval before starting any work. Once you have that, your rebate amount is usually locked in while you complete the installation.

Why doesn’t a new build qualify?

These rebates are designed for existing homes. To qualify, your home must have been occupied for at least six months. New builds are already built to modern energy standards, so they’re not eligible.
